What Are Roof Top Tents Made of?
Rooftop tents made out of 100 percent cotton fabrics are usually breathable, abrasion-resistant, and durable. They allow air to pass, making campers need extra insulation for cold and windy days. The heavier the cotton fabric used, the heavier the tent and the less breathable it is. Although cotton tents are strong, they can be challenging to dry after they get wet. They absorb moisture easily, making them difficult to use in the rain. Overall, cotton rooftop tents are great for camping in the summer.
Polyester rooftop tents are light, stretchy, and naturally water-resistant. They are tear-resistant and dry easily, making them an excellent choice for all seasons. While these are great, polyester tents are not breathable and suffer from abrasion easily.
Poly-cotton rooftop tents are made with a mixture of cotton and polyester fibers. This causes them to share the characteristic features of both fibers, quickly making them the best rooftop tent choice any camper can invest in. Soft Shell Roof Top Tents
Soft shell tents are the most common type of rooftop tent. They fold in half and expand the tent’s canopy as they open, making setting up a breeze. One half of the tent mounts to your vehicle’s roof rack; the other half is supported by a telescoping ladder that extends down from the tent to the ground. Soft shell tents are popular because they not only come in many different varieties for different weather conditions, but they also come in 2, 3, and 4 person sizes. Some soft shell tents also offer an annex that provides an additional private room below the tent, perfect for getting ready for the day’s adventure.
Hard Shell Roof Top Tents
A hard shell tent allows the user to quickly pop-up their tent with the release of a few latches. The quick setup and tear down make them ideal for the stop-and-go camping that is common with overlanding and off-roading. This style of tent does not overhang the vehicle like a softshell tent, only extending upward, making them great for lifted/ taller vehicles and tight campsites. Hard shell tents can hold up to 2 people, and in some cases, they can double as a cargo box to transport gear as well.
How to Use the Roof Top Tent?
Once you’ve reached your destination, how do you set up the rooftop tent? There are two options, fold-out or pop-up, both are a lot quicker than traditional ground tents.
Fold-out
Most common with soft-shell roof top tents. Simply pull off the travel cover, pull out the ladder and unfold the tent. Adjust the ladder so that it reaches the floor and then you’re ready to enjoy!
Pop-up
Most common for hard-shell roof top tents. Simply unlatch the latches and the tent will pop up into place. It’s that simple!
Although you are welcome to leave your tent on your vehicle for the Winter season, a lot of our customers decide to remove it from their vehicle for the Winter until Spring when camping season starts up again.
We advise against storing your tent outdoors if not on your vehicle and not being used. The elements can have damaging effects if not in use as moisture can build up with changing temperatures. Mold or rotting can ensue.
Tents do best when stored in a building with a consistent temperature -- it can be cold or warm (most customers store their tents in their garage). We don’t worry about this when your tent is on your vehicle because you are using it and giving everything a chance to air out!
Leaving Your Tent on Your Vehicle
If you are going to leave your tent on your vehicle for the winter but don’t plan on using it, we suggest taking the mattress out, minimizing the risk of moisture build up.
Storing the Tent Upright against a Wall
Regardless of your tent model - if you choose this storage option, to avoid injury or damages to valuables you must place a strap or two of good quality around the tent and attach that to your wall. This will prevent the tent from tipping over and falling on top of a person, pet or valuable.
Storing the Tent on the Floor or a Shelf
You might have the floorspace or shelf space to store your tent in it’s normal, bottom down position. If you’re going to do this, make sure you do not put the tent directly on the ground or shelf. Get a Pallet or Two Pieces of Wood (to mimic cross rails) and set the tent on top. This keeps airflow and prevents any water from creeping into the tent from the floor, as well as creepy crawlies.
